Shavuot Evening Program - A Celebration of Torah and Revelation

Thursday, May 28, 2020 5 Sivan 5780

7:30 PM - 11:00 PM

The festival of Shavuot, which celebrated the offering of the first fruits of the grain harvest, also marks the culmination of our people’s journey from Egypt to Mount Sinai. On this holy day, we best celebrate the gift of Torah by immersing ourselves in learning and study. It was customary to hold a Tikkun – an all-night study party with classes throughout the night until sunrise.

This year, Temple Beth El will celebrate a virtual Tikkun L’Eil Shavuot with our own evening of study. Led by Rabbi Dr. Jan Katzew of Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion and Temple Beth El’s rabbis, we look forward to an evening of learning and inspiration.

7:30 - 8:30 pm: “Chutzpah and Humility: The Mussar Movement and the Cultivation of Character” with Rabbi Dr. Jan Katzew of the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion
Teaching in memory of Rabbi Aaron Panken z”l, president of HUC-JIR, Sponsored by the Beck Family Foundation
We live in two worlds at once, the one inside us and the one around us. Both worlds are broken and in need of repair. On Erev Shavuot, Thursday, May 28th, beginning at 7:30 pm we will honor the memory of Rabbi Aaron Panken, by building on his legacy of healing the worlds. We will start with the world inside us, the world our Sages addressed with the study and practice of Mussar. They believed that every person is capable of moral growth, if not ethical excellence, by engaging in focused study, contemplative meditation, disciplined practice and intentional prayer. We will uncover four virtues all of us need to nurture - humility, hutzpah, wisdom and justice. Please join us as we prepare for the annual ritual of accepting the Torah that we have been given.

8:30 - 9:00 pm: Virtual Oneg and Congregational Schmooze

9:00 - 10:00 pm: “Holy Awareness and the Pursuit of Wisdom” with Rabbi Dan Levin
Rabbi Moses Cordovero taught that “Wisdom is the father of all created things.” We will explore how wisdom and understanding are illuminated through awareness, and how the cultivation of wisdom deepens our spiritual core.

10:00 - 11:00 pm: “Tzedek and Tzedakah – Righteousness, Action, and Justice” with Rabbi Greg Weisman
What does it mean to be righteous and just? What do we owe each other? The ideas of tzedek, justice, and tzedakah, righteous giving, are intertwined, and in this learning session we will explore how these ideas guide us in our everyday lives.

*z"l, of blessed memory
